As we lean into 2026, I’ve been thinking about hope and why it may be one of the most important and overlooked skills we need to develop in the workplace.
Digging into the research, it’s hard to dispute the impact that hopelessness is having on the well being of our employees, particularly Gen Z and Younger Millennials, and, by extension, on performance, productivity, and ultimately the profitability of our organizations.
Over half of Canadian employees spend part of their workday thinking about personal finances, and nearly 25% say financial stress has directly impacted their performance. Nearly 78% of young employees report experiencing intense emotions related to climate change.
The good news is that research consistently shows that hope, a combination of optimism and self-efficacy, is incredibly powerful in the workplace.
So, what can leaders do to help?
Leaders can model hope by proactively addressing challenges and involving employees in finding solutions. While this can’t eliminate all stressors, taking small, meaningful steps like developing financial wellness and peer support programs that includes budgeting workshops and encouraging the sharing of resources like housing and car pooling information makes a big difference.
Beyond workshops and resources, organizations can offer sessions on renting versus buying and tools like managing subscriptions, utilities, or phone plans and informal supports like childcare or pet care swaps. To ease climate related anxiety, workplaces can share sustainability updates, enable employee led environmental initiatives, and promote practical actions such as low cost commuting or resource reduction challenges, giving employees a sense of control and community.
Hope doesn’t come from ignoring reality, it comes from showing people they have agency within it. As leaders, when we invest in hope, we’re not just supporting well-being, we’re strengthening the resilience, performance and future of organizations.
