This course is designed for mentors who want to get the most out of the mentoring relationship with their mentees.  We provide core knowledge and practical ways for building a mentoring relationship that creates value for both mentoring partners and the organization.  During this hands on and highly interactive course, you will learn:

  • The key attributes of successful mentors
  • Elements of an effective mentoring relationship
  • How to take a learner centered approach to mentoring and weave a real connection with your mentee
  • Key elements to a measurable learning plan
  • The 5 steps to successful closure

This is a self paced course supported by Zoom Meetings.

Instructional Method: Powerpoint, video, group discussion and interactive exercises will be used in this course.


Lesson 1 – The Impact of Mentors
75 minutes

In this session, mentors will learn the key attributes of successful mentors and the various “hats” they wear in a mentoring relationship.  We will discuss the effective elements of a mentoring relationship and how to sustain the pace of the relationship.  You will discover why it’s important to take a learner centered approach to mentoring and how to weave a real connection with your mentee. In this session, you will learn to:

  • Define mentoring
  • Articulate and understand the effective elements of a mentoring relationship
  • Role play a mentoring conversation
  • Experiment with mentoring language to lead
  • Choose mentoring tools to communicate more effectively

Lesson 2 – Monitoring the Mentoring Relationship
75 minutes

You are off to a great start with your mentee but how do you know you are on track for successfully completing your goals? In this session, you will discover how to maintain the momentum of the relationship and make sure that the learning continues to be of value to both partners.  Come prepared to share your mentoring experiences with each other during this session. In this session, you will learn to:

  • Define a quality mentoring relationship
  • Describe the process for building and maintaining a quality mentoring relationship
  • Understand the role of a mentoring agreement and learning plan
  • Introduce the mentoring agreement and learning plan to your mentee
  • Choose a mentoring agreement and learning plan that creates value for both mentoring partners

Lesson 3 – Coming to Closure
75 minutes


The road to closure is a highly reflective one and normally begins as soon as the mentoring partners start working toward satisfying their learning goals.  Closure presents an opportunity for the mentee and mentor to gather their learning and share the mutually beneficial impact of the experience.  In this session, you will discover the signs that closure is imminent along with six (5) steps to effective closure.  In this session, you will learn to:

  • Define coming to closure
  • Describe the importance of coming to closure
  • Develop a checklist for coming to closure
  • Experiment with your mentoring checklist
  • Assess the effectiveness of your coming to closure checklist and how it creates value for you, your mentoring partner and your organization
  • Finalize your checklist
